When you're trying to promote a small business, budget is always going to be one of your concerns. It's almost impossible to imagine that a small business would have unlimited money to throw at marketing. Therefore, it comes important to know where each dollar is spent. The key is making sure that each dollar produces the maximum return for marketing value. This is why looking into economical search engine optimization techniques are a great idea when trying to get a small business off the ground online.

SEO is not something that needs to be expensive. There are some ways that people can spend money on SEO, usually when they pay someone else to do SEO for them, but by and large the techniques which improve your rankings in the search engines do not cost money. Instead, they take an application of time and thought, so that you can target your efforts to specifically rank better for your chosen keywords.

There are two primary types of SEO, both of which can be extremely affordable if you want them to be. The first of these is known as on site SEO. These are changes which are made to your website itself which will help it rank higher. This can be done by selecting keywords that you want to focus on for each page of your website. You can then optimize each of those pages to rank better for those keywords. This includes not only using the keywords in the body of text itself, but also placing them in important places like titles and headings.

Then there is off site SEO to consider. This is primarily a matter of getting links back to your site from other sites around the web. There are two things to focus on when dealing with offsite SEO, and these are the anchor text, and the sites quality that you are building links from. The anchor text is the actual words that appear as part of the link back to your site. Ideally, these should be your keywords. You also want to build links from sites with high page rank, and which are related to your site in terms of content. That will make those links count for more in the search algorithm. You may also want to build links focused at bringing in local search results, such as by building links from local directories or Yellow pages.
